What is Transmission Oil?
Transmission Oil lubricates the bearings and metal parts inside a car's manual gearbox and prevents them from grinding while moving.
In an automatic transmission, it not only lubricates the moving parts, but also provides hydraulic pressure and friction to make the internal parts work. Transmission oil in manual and automatic transmissions also helps keep the transmission cool.
Types of Transmission Oil
In general, there are two main types of transmission oil: automatic transmission oil and manual transmission oil. There are also synthetic transmission oils and specialty oils used and specified in various types of transmissions including CVT and dual clutch models. To keep your car running properly, it's important to know what type of transmission you have and what specific fluids it needs.
Automatic Transmission Oil
This type of transmission oil is designed for cars that have an automatic transmission. It is also used in some of the more modern manual transmission cars. Automatic transmission oil meets automatic transmission requirements and assists a variety of functions, including:
- Gear lubrication
- Torque converter operation
- Valve body operation
- Clutch friction operation
- Brake band friction
- Transmission cooling
Manual Transmission Oil
Manual transmission oil in older vehicles, which is sometimes referred to as manual transmission oil or lubricant, is common to some older manual transmission cars.
These heavier 75W to 140W oils have never been used in an automatic transmission car, and even if your car has a manual transmission it doesn't mean you will use this type of manual transmission oil. Most later model vehicles with manual transmissions will use automatic oil in their manual transmissions.
Synthetic Transmission Oil vs. Traditional
While traditional transmission oils are made from crude oil and reformulated hydrocarbons for different vehicle specifications, synthetic transmission oils are made through different chemical reactions. This type of transmission oil tends not to break down, oxidize, or thin out at high temperatures.
So how do you choose between traditional and synthetic transmission fluids? Unfortunately, these answers are not always black and white. Be sure to check the specifications provided by your vehicle manufacturer and if in doubt, consult a transmission specialist.
What Is Transmission Oil Like?
Generally, automatic transmission oil has a thinner consistency and is clear with a red hue, although some automatic transmission oils are now blue/green, purple or even yellow, depending on the manufacturer. This makes it easy to distinguish it from motor oil and other oils flowing through your car. It also makes it easier to detect leaks.
On the other hand, manual transmission oil is usually darker in color and thicker in consistency. It will also have a stronger smell.
